Slay the Spire 2 Strategy Ladder

A deeper STS2-only draft/meta guide: package signals, known synergies, pivot rules, anti-patterns, and playstyle notes for Ironclad, Silent, Regent, Necrobinder, and Defect. Built from current web sources; exact card numbers are patch-sensitive because Early Access likes to rearrange the furniture while you sleep.

Core thesis: do not force archetypes. Draft jobs, then let repeated card/relic signals become packages, then let packages become engines. The Spire does not award points for dying with a coherent theme.
Jobs → Packages → Engines

A card can be good because it solves a fight, bridges a package, or completes an engine. Know which one it is before taking it.

Mitigation density diagnostic

Count Block, Weak, strength reduction, Frost, Osty tanking, and other damage prevention. Too little = HP leak. Too much = no kill turns.

Early frontload picks

AOE counts if it is good enough into one target or solves upcoming multi-enemy fights. Decorative AOE is still decorative.

Deep drafting model: what a pick is really doing

Pick roleWhat it meansGood examples of the ideaTrap version
Immediate jobSolves the next elite/hallway/boss problem.Frontload damage early; Weak vs big attacks; AOE into multi-enemy pressure.Passing immediate damage for a scaling card that needs two future pieces.
Bridge cardPlayable now, points toward later synergy.Pommel Strike for Ironclad draw/Strike packages; Leading Strike for Silent Shiv; Cold Snap for Defect Frost; Bulwark for Regent Forge/block; Grave Warden for Necrobinder Souls/block.A synergy-only card that is dead until payoff appears.
PayoffMakes a package worth building around.Accuracy, Dominate, Dark Embrace, Child of the Stars, No Escape, Defragment.Multiple payoffs with no enablers; congratulations, your deck is a committee.
EngineRepeatedly creates output, draw, energy, defense, or scaling.Sly discard chains; Exhaust + draw; Focus + orb spam; Souls cycling; Stars generation/spending loop.Engine parts that consume all Energy before stabilizing.
CompressionOne card covers multiple jobs.Damage + draw; block + Weak; AOE + block; resource + draw.Taking three narrow cards where one dense card would do.

“Do I take this?” checklist

  1. What is the next fight that can punish me?
  2. Does this card solve that fight or only flatter my future self?
  3. Can I play it with current Energy/Stars/Souls/orbs/draw?
  4. Does it improve first cycle or redraw cycle?
  5. Does it shift my mitigation density toward or away from sanity?
  6. If it is a payoff, do I already have 2+ enablers?
  7. If it is an enabler, do I have a payoff or is it good standalone?

Strong signals: when to lean in

  • Two bridge cards + one payoff: usually enough to start prioritizing the package.
  • Directional relic + playable card support: can justify pathing more conservatively while you finish the build.
  • Payoff that also solves today: premium. Example: defensive payoff that blocks now, scaling payoff that is not dead early.
  • Resource balance already works: Regent with both Stars and spenders; Defect with both slots and channeling; Silent with both discard and Sly payoff.

Weak signals: when not to force

  • One shiny rare with no support. That is a lottery ticket, not a strategy.
  • Too many spenders: Star-cost cards, expensive attacks, orb slots, or exhaust payoffs without fuel.
  • Too much setup: if turn 1–2 are always “please don’t hit me,” the deck is not clever; it is vulnerable.
  • Package conflict: a relic/card that punishes playing many cards in a combo deck, or a deck that needs specific cards early but keeps bloating.

Ironclad — Strength, Vulnerable, Exhaust, Block, Self-damage

Ironclad’s Burning Blood lets you spend HP more aggressively, but the real draft skill is deciding whether your run is a fast damage deck, a debuff/Strength deck, an Exhaust engine, a Block conversion deck, or self-damage payoff. These overlap; forcing just one is optional masochism.

Known synergy packages

PackageSignals / piecesDraft logic
Strike Slop / draw spamHellraiser, Pommel Strike, upgraded Pommel Strike, Perfected Strike.Pommel is the bridge: damage + draw. Hellraiser turns Strike text into output. Perfected Strike can be early frontload without committing forever.
Vulnerable payoffBully, Dismantle, Dominate, Tremble, Molten Fist, Cruelty, Vicious, Paper Phrog.Vulnerable is a full STS2 direction. Tremble is efficient application; Dominate and Bully are payoffs. Don’t rely on Bash alone.
Exhaust engineBurning Pact, Fiend Fire, Second Wind, True Grit+, Corruption, Dark Embrace, Feel No Pain, Evil Eye, Ashen Strike.Start with good standalone exhaust/draw/block. Add powers when the deck already exhausts enough cards. Exhaust also shrinks redraw time.
Block conversionBarricade, Body Slam, Unmovable, dense block cards, Prolong, Vambrace, Pael’s Legion.Works when block is already premium. Unmovable can make Body Slam real with fewer pieces. Watch the “all defense, no fight ender” trap.
Self-damageRupture, Inferno, Offering, Bloodletting, Crimson Mantle, Tear Asunder, Blood Wall, Hemokinesis.HP loss is a cost until Rupture/Inferno-style cards convert it. Burning Blood helps pay the tax, but elites can still collect interest.

Ironclad draft/play rules

  • Early: prioritize damage and AOE enough to exploit Burning Blood. Whirlwind/Breakthrough-style effects can count as early frontload when multi-enemy fights matter.
  • Mid: decide which conversion engine is emerging: Vulnerable→Strength/damage, Exhaust→draw/block, Block→damage, or HP loss→output.
  • Upgrade priority: draw/cost/scaling upgrades beat tiny numeric bumps unless the bump crosses elite/boss kill thresholds.
  • Anti-pattern: taking Rupture because you have one Bloodletting, then never finding density. That’s a postcard from a better run, not this run.

Silent — Poison, Shiv, Sly discard, draw control

Silent’s packages are unusually mixable. Shiv solves frontload and “play many cards”; Poison solves long-fight damage; Sly/discard solves consistency and resource efficiency. Strong Silent runs often braid two packages rather than swearing fealty to one cardboard religion.

Known synergy packages

PackagePiecesHow it wins
Shiv frontload/scalingAccuracy, Leading Strike, Blade Dance, Cloak and Dagger, Blade of Ink, Fan of Knives, Knife Trap, Infinite Blades.Shivs are 0-cost attacks. Accuracy turns them from chip into real damage. Fan of Knives-style effects solve multi-enemy fights. Blade of Ink adds Weak utility.
Play-many-cardsShivs, Afterimage, Serpent Form, Strangle, Finisher, Shadow Step.Zero-cost attacks and draw turn “number of cards played” into block/damage. Needs hand size/draw; can choke if you draft too many expensive cards.
Sly / discard enginePrepared+, Acrobatics, Calculated Gamble, Tools of the Trade, Reflex, Tactician, Untouchable, Hand Trick, Master Planner.Discard becomes output: free Sly cards, extra draw, extra energy. Even without payoff, upgraded discard improves consistency.
Poison pressurePoisoned Stab, Bouncing Flask, Noxious Fumes, Bubble Bubble, Accelerant, Corrosive Wave.Poison gives scaling damage without spending every future turn attacking. Pair with defense/draw so long fights don’t kill you first.
Skill-density attacksFlechettes, Pinpoint, Backflip, Deflect, Leg Sweep, cheap Skills.Silent naturally drafts Skills. Pinpoint/Flechettes convert defensive turns into damage turns.

Silent draft/play rules

  • Early: take damage. Leading Strike, Poisoned Stab, Blade Dance-style cards are early output even if the final deck is not “a Shiv deck.”
  • Shiv vs Poison: false binary. Shiv kills small/urgent threats; Poison scales into big targets. Use both if rewards say so.
  • Sly timing: discard enablers are good early if upgraded or draw-positive. Sly payoffs become great when discard is already reliable.
  • Defensive shell: Backflip, Deflect, Leg Sweep, Weak, Dexterity-style scaling let Silent survive while poison/discard/shiv engines mature.
  • Anti-pattern: drafting Accuracy with too few Shiv generators, or Poison with no defense. Both are “eventually” plans. The enemy attacks now. Rude, but consistent.

Regent — Stars, Forge, Sovereign Blade, hand/draw control

Regent is a resource-balancing character. Stars persist and have no cap, but they are not free. The strongest Regent drafts are picky: premium Star spenders, enough generation, and defensive cards that do not ask for a full second economy degree.

Known synergy packages

PackagePiecesDraft logic
Stars payoffAstral Pulse, Gamma Blast, Comet, Dying Star, Decisions, Decisions, Reflect, Particle Wall, Child of the Stars.Star spenders can be absurdly efficient, but only if you can pay them. Prioritize premium spenders over every okay spender.
Star generationVenerate, Glow, Shining Strike, Hidden Cache, Royal Gamble, Genesis.Generators often cost Energy and may do little immediately. Draft enough, not a souvenir collection.
Forge / Sovereign BladeBulwark, Furnace, Seeking Edge, The Smith, Conqueror, Summon Forth.Forge is best when stapled to playable cards. Bulwark is a bridge because block + Forge. Full Blade builds need clear payoff, not just “I saw Forge once.”
Hand/draw controlPhoton Cut, Cosmic Indifference, Glimmer, Kingly Punch, Kingly Kick.Repeatedly drawing/manipulating cards can reduce costs or grow damage. This package rewards planning redraws, not just playing left to right like a tired raccoon.
Block from resourcesChild of the Stars, Reflect, Particle Wall, Bulwark, Dying Star strength reduction.Regent cannot ignore defense while admiring his own economy. Spend Stars defensively when needed.

Regent draft/play rules

  • Resource ratio: ask “how many Star-cost cards do I actually expect to play per cycle?” If the answer is “not these three,” skip one.
  • Early: Astral Pulse-type AOE is premium, but repeated use depends on generation. Do not overload Star costs before adding generation.
  • Forge: treat as passive scaling until you see strong Blade payoff. Bulwark/Furnace can solve boss scaling without full commitment.
  • Hand control: top-deck/discard-pile manipulation lets you line up Kingly cards, premium spenders, or defensive turns.
  • Anti-pattern: too many generators and no payoff = durdle; too many spenders and no generation = brick. Regent contains multitudes, regrettably including both failure modes.

Necrobinder — Osty, Doom, Souls, Ethereal

Necrobinder is about converting unusual resources into safety and inevitability. Osty is shield plus weapon. Doom is delayed execution. Souls are draw/cycle fuel. Ethereal can become upside. The trick is making sure your “clever” plan still blocks the turn before Doom finishes its paperwork.

Known synergy packages

PackagePiecesHow to evaluate
Osty attack/summonPoke, Fetch, Flatten, Reanimate, Unleash, Rattle, Sic ’Em, Squeeze, Calcify, Bone Shards.Fetch/Poke are bridges because 0-cost Osty attacks feed multi-hit payoffs. Summon keeps Osty alive and makes Unleash-style damage scale.
Doom executionBlight Strike, Scourge, Negative Pulse, No Escape, Death’s Door, Sleight of Flesh, End of Days.Doom can be above-curve damage, but kills after the enemy turn. Draft dense defense/Weak/block so the target does not invoice you before dying.
Soul cycleGrave Warden, Dirge, Capture Spirit, Haunt, Soul Storm, other Soul payoffs.Souls are 0-cost draw-2 Exhaust cards. They reduce cycle time, find powers/payoffs, and fuel “played/exhausted” effects.
Ethereal upsideFear, Defy, Lethality, Eidolon, Ethereal payoff cards.Ethereal is not only a downside here. It can become a package if you have cards that reward playing/exhausting Ethereal cards.
Debuff controlFear, Defy, Putrefy, Debilitate, Enfeebling Touch, Deathbringer.Weak/Vulnerable are premium because they buy time and improve damage. Especially important with delayed Doom plans.

Necrobinder draft/play rules

  • Early: strong standalone commons/uncommons first. Poke, Blight Strike, Fear, Defy, Grave Warden, Scourge-style cards bridge into multiple builds.
  • Osty: two Fetches or multiple 0-cost Osty attacks are a real signal. Payoffs like Rattle/Sic ’Em/Squeeze need density.
  • Doom: draft defense with it. Death’s Door-style block is the kind of payoff that fixes Doom’s timing weakness.
  • Souls: draw fuel means you can carry one or two heavier payoffs more safely, because you can dig past awkward hands.
  • Anti-pattern: Doom-only offense with low mitigation. That enemy is still taking its turn. Very inconsiderate, very fatal.

Defect — Orbs, Focus, Glass, Status, Claw/Uproar

Defect’s most reliable STS2 baseline is still orb value plus Focus, with new wrinkles: Glass orb AOE, richer status-card synergies, and more explicit rewards for unique orb/count management. Claw and Uproar are real but purposeful; half-building them is how robots learn disappointment.

Orb packages

Orb / packagePiecesRole
LightningCracked Core, Zap+, Ball Lightning, Voltaic, Lightning Rod, Tempest+, Supercritical, Storm + cheap Powers.Reliable passive/direct damage. Zap upgrade is efficient. Lightning is often early offense while Frost stabilizes.
FrostCold Snap, Coolheaded+, Chill, Glacier+, Ice Lance, Focus.Primary orb defense. Frost becomes much better with Focus and multi-orb generation. Chill is premium into multi-enemy fights.
DarkDarkness, Shadow Shield, Loop-style passive triggers, long-fight setup.Delayed large damage. Good when your deck can stall/control and trigger/evoke intentionally.
GlassGlasswork and other Glass channeling; AOE passives/evokes.New STS2 AOE orb. Strong into multi-enemy fights; decays, so timing matters.
PlasmaPlasma generation/evoke tools.Energy engine. Needs draw/spenders so extra Energy becomes output rather than a shiny unused resource.

Other Defect packages

PackagePiecesDraft logic
Focus/orb spamDefragment, Focus upgrades, Cold Snap, Ball Lightning, Barrage, Chill, Glacier, Capacitor.Focus scales all orb values. More slots are good only if you can fill them; otherwise Capacitor is delayed cardboard.
Status synergyBoost Away, Fight Through, Compact, Iteration, Smokestack, Trash to Treasure.STS2 gives Defect more reason to create/transform statuses. Compact can turn the drawback into Fuel/draw/energy.
ClawClaw, All for One, Feral, draw/cycle, 0-cost density.Needs repeated Claw plays. If you cannot redraw/recur it, it is just a tiny attack wearing ambition.
UproarUproar plus attack-thinning/removal.Wants Uproar to become the only Attack, chaining into itself. Requires deliberate deck surgery, not casual sampling.

Defect draft/play rules

  • Early: fill slots and get flexible damage/block. Cold Snap, Ball Lightning, Barrage, Sweeping Beam-style cards are good early job solvers.
  • Focus: the more orb density you have, the better Focus gets. Upgrade Focus cards early when they change long-fight math.
  • Slots: more slots delay evoking. Great for passive Frost/Lightning boards; awkward if your deck needs frequent evokes.
  • Status: once you take status-generating cards, look for Compact/Iteration payoffs so drawbacks become fuel.
  • Anti-pattern: drafting Capacitor without channeling, Claw without redraw, or Uproar without removals. The common theme is optimism, which is not a mechanic.

How to pilot drafts, not just hands

Before Act: look at boss, then path backward. Decide what job the boss asks for: burst, scaling, defense, AOE, debuff answer, or consistency.
Before Elite: ask whether your first two turns can produce enough damage/mitigation. If not, route to a normal fight/shop/rest first.
After reward: classify the card as job, bridge, payoff, engine, or skip. If you cannot classify it, it is probably skip.
At rest site: upgrade if the upgrade changes access, cost, draw, scaling, or a fight breakpoint. Rest when HP loss kills the run, not when the button feels cozy.
At shop: remove to improve cycle time, buy dense answers, and respect relic signals. Avoid shopping as emotional support.

Advanced anti-patterns

  • The theme trap: “I am Poison” / “I am Forge” / “I am Claw” before your deck can survive. You are not a theme; you are a problem-solving machine with a health bar.
  • The payoff pile: multiple powers/payoffs, too few enablers, miserable first cycle.
  • The frontload hangover: taking five early attacks and never pivoting to scaling/draw.
  • The resource mismatch: Star spenders without Stars; orb slots without orbs; discard without Sly/draw payoff; self-damage without conversion.
  • The tiny deck fantasy: removing cards before adding enough output. Small bad decks lose consistently, which is technically consistency.
  • The giant deck fog: taking every “fine” card until your best card is an urban legend.
